The ancient Chinese Silk Route traverses some of the world's remotest and harshest landscapes and lest any doubts remain - adventure travel in Tibet, Xinjiang and Kyrgyzstan is all about big mountains. Passes encountered are regularly in excess of 5000m, so only the fit and healthy need apply. Tibet travel is always at altitude and even when not passing over high passes, overland travelers will be still well above 3000 metres.

The route is packed with iconic Central Asian landmarks, from the high passes of Kyrgyzstan's Tien Shan, the fabled Karakoram Highway between Kashgar and Taxkorgan, the Tibetan Plateau, Mount Everest, the Friendship Highway to the hard won Torugart Pass and vast inhospitable Taklimakan Desert.
