How to Learn Basic Chinese in a Day
It's not very hard to learn a few basic Chinese Mandarin phrases and will help your Chinese friends to realise that you are making an effort to communicate and be friendly. They will certainly appreciate this, even if you get a few things wrong. Try and learn the four tones first - you'll find them on the Internet. Don't worry too much if you get it wrong at first - practice makes perfect.
"Nee how" is not hard to say - just try it! It's spelled "Ni Hao", of course. Translated literally it means "you good", but is generally used as a greeting such as "hi there" or "hello".
The words for "thank you" are not hard to say either. Spelled "Xie-Xie", they are pronounced "Shi-e-shi-e or Zhi-Zhi.
"Boo Ker Chi" is easy to say too. This means, "you're welcome" which has a myriad of uses. The correct spelling is Bu Ke Qi.
"Tai hao Le" is the correct spelling for the word meaning "Wonderful!" The pronunciation is not difficult either. Try "Thai Hao Lah". You can use it if someone gives you a business card or agrees to something you want.
When you receive a compliment, you should not say Xie-Xie, (thank you) but Na Li, Na Li.
Each word except Na li Na li should be repeated twice or more as that is the Chinese Mandarin way. But don't confuse it with Cantonese, as the two are quite different.
