American Debut of Chinese Novel Set Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Milford, Conn.

MILFORD, CONN. (PRWEB) October 18, 2005 -- The American debut of “When the Purple Mountain Burns,” a new novel about the Rape of Nanking, will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Milford Senior Center, 9 Jepson Drive, Milford, Conn.

This will be the first off-campus U.S. presentation about the English-language version of book by its author, Dr. Shouhua Qi of Southington, an associate professor of English at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury. The public is invited without charge.

"The book is both stunning and disturbing," says Madeline Salustri, head of Milford Friends of the Library and Milford Writers Unlimited. "It comes at a time when America and Americans are struggling with the realities of war and cross-cultural tensions, and when we need to know more about China, a fast emerging global power, and to understand its culture, people and history.

“The novel, Qi’s first, presents a riveting, profoundly intimate portrait of Nanjing, Qi’s hometown and the capital of China at the time, during the first six days after its fall to the Japanese Army in the long winter of 1937-38. It probes the souls of victims and perpetrators of war atrocities, and hails the war’s unassuming heroes and heroines. “

"This book has been called a 'must read for America,'" said Mary Steinmetz, program director at the Senior Center. "We are delighted to have it featured as part of our Fall Lecture Series."

The book is available in bookstores and at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com. Dr. Qi will have copies for sale and for book signing at the event.

(Note to editors: **“Lifelong Mission,” enclosed, describes Qi and his book in more detail.**Interviews are available, as are review copies of the book.** Digital photos of the author, the book and scenes from the actual Rape of Nanking also are available; see attachment labeled “Photos.”)
